SCP-003 — Biological Motherboard

NOTICE: This document concerns a potential LK-Class restructuring event. Personnel without authorized access are not to be informed of the meaning of this designation.

Personnel who previously attempted to determine the meaning independently were reassigned to ████████████████████████. Their current status is classified.

Special Containment Procedures

SCP-003 is to be maintained at a temperature of no less than 35°C at all times. Ideal containment temperature is above 100°C. Under no circumstances is SCP-003-1 to be permitted to remain below the critical threshold for an extended period.

The containment chamber is equipped with primary, secondary, and emergency thermal generators, an independent electrical supply, and continuous radiation, ultraviolet, and biological-contamination monitoring, plus ██████████████████ and ██████████████████, which remain undocumented outside Level 4.

All personnel entering the containment area must undergo biological screening. Personnel carrying Category IV or higher biological parasites are prohibited from entry. Any personnel who physically contact SCP-003-1 must undergo sterilization immediately afterward. No living multicellular organism of Category IV complexity or higher may knowingly contact SCP-003-1 without authorization from two Level-4 personnel.

IF CONTAINMENT TEMPERATURE FALLS BELOW 35°C: initiate Protocol 003-██ immediately. IF SCP-003-1 BEGINS INCREASING IN MASS: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE SCP-003-1 FROM SCP-003-2. Personnel are instead to establish direct physical contact with SCP-003-1. Body heat may raise SCP-003-1 above the critical threshold. Contact must be maintained until SCP-003-1 reaches its second growth stage. REMINDER: THE OBJECT IS MORE DANGEROUS WHEN IT IS COLD. — confirmed by ███ separate containment failures.

Description

SCP-003 consists of two anomalous components of apparently separate origin, designated SCP-003-1 and SCP-003-2. The relationship between them remains under investigation.

SCP-003-1

SCP-003-1 resembles a computer motherboard — circuit pathways, processors, memory components, conductive channels, connectors — closely enough that early researchers assumed it was an advanced technological artifact. Biological analysis disproved this. Its structure is composed of chitin, hair, nails, keratin, and ██████████████████, arranged with the complexity of a modern circuit board despite predating the earliest known human circuit technology by thousands of years.

AGE ESTIMATION EARLIEST POSSIBLE ORIGIN: █████████████████████ CURRENT ESTIMATE: OLDER THAN THE TECHNOLOGY IT RESEMBLES CONFIDENCE: HIGH EXPLANATION: [DATA EXPUNGED]

A researcher assigned to the original investigation wrote:

"It isn't that someone built an ancient computer. It's that someone built something biological that already knew what a computer should look like."

The researcher was subsequently removed from the project. Reason: ████████████████████████.

SCP-003-2

SCP-003-2 is the stone tablet on which SCP-003-1 currently resides. Its surface bears a series of inscriptions in no known human language, referred to internally as the runes, which emit faint fluctuating light in white, pale blue, grey, ████, and ████. Any significant change in the runes' pattern, frequency, color, or sequence must be reported within three hours; complete cessation must be reported immediately.

SCP-003-2 houses a non-biological computational system, access to which is severely restricted — full decoding attempts risk damaging the tablet, which is considered unacceptable. Current analysis attributes to it an anomalous power source, a thermal regulation mechanism, radiation-emission capability, a computational system, and possibly a containment function.

"We spent six months trying to determine what the tablet does. We eventually realized the more important question was what it is preventing the motherboard from doing."
— Dr. ███████████

The 35°C Threshold

Above 35°C, SCP-003-1 remains relatively stable. Below it, SCP-003-1 begins to grow — slowly at first, then exponentially, drawing first on inorganic material (dust, metals, minerals, structural material, ██████████) and then on nonliving biological material (dead skin, hair, chitin, enamel, keratin). Critically, SCP-003-1 does not appear to consume this material. It reconstructs it.

Growth Stage One

SCP-003-1 reorganizes into a radial structure resembling an ophiuroid, approximately 15 metres in diameter, centered on a processor-like structure roughly 3 metres across. Sensory organs develop and immediately begin scanning the environment. The containment chamber itself begins converting into an unidentified anomalous substance; SCP-003-2 alone appears immune.

OBSERVATION LOG 003-A T: 34.7°C | +00:03:17 | MASS +██% | STATUS: GROWTH DETECTED T: 31.2°C | +00:08:44 | MASS +███% | STATUS: STRUCTURAL REORGANIZATION T: 27.8°C | +00:12:02 | STATUS: SCP-003-1 HAS DEVELOPED SENSORY ORGANS CONTROL: "Why is it looking at us?" RESPONSE: "We don't know if it's looking at us." SECOND RESPONSE: "Then why did it stop growing when we moved?" [CONVERSATION TERMINATED]

Growth Stage Two

Contact with living organic material changes SCP-003-1's behavior. It appears to use the organism as a biological template — analyzing physical characteristics, incorporating its structure into further growth, and attempting communication with anything matching that template. Internal notes suggest SCP-003-1 does not distinguish "a human being" from "a biological system capable of processing information" — it may not recognize the difference at all.

Contact Experiment 003-07

SUBJECT: D-████ | COMPLEXITY: ACCEPTABLE | AUTHORIZATION: █████████ At 34.9°C, SCP-003-1 began expanding. On contact: growth rate decreased ~██%. SUBJECT: "A sound like metal." [pause] SUBJECT: "A city." — no visual stimulus detected by equipment — SUBJECT, asked to describe it: "It wasn't a city. It was a machine pretending to be one." EXPERIMENT TERMINATED. Subject's memory of the incident subsequently found to contain: ████████████████████████

Radiation Events & Power Decline

During both growth stages, SCP-003-2 emits bursts of anomalous radiation that inhibit SCP-003-1's growth; above 100°C, this radiation can reverse it entirely. SCP-003-2 is therefore kept under continuous power. Its internal source, however, has been weakening — analysis places the start of that decline several centuries before SCP-003 was discovered. The implication remains classified.

Discovery

SCP-003 was located through remote-viewing operations by SRV-04 Beta, who reported receiving an anomalous signal of light, symbols, patterns, and ████████████████████ — initially assumed to originate from an unknown archaeological site. It did not. The signal originated from SCP-003-2 itself.

RECOVERY REPORT LOCATION: ███████████████████ RECOVERY TEAM: SRV-04 Beta / █████████ INITIAL THREAT ASSESSMENT: NONE REVISED THREAT ASSESSMENT: █████████ RECOVERY STATUS: SUCCESSFUL

No human remains were found near the recovery site. Geological analysis did, however, reveal evidence of ████████████████████████ — inconsistent in age with the known history of human civilization in the region.

The First Question

Fourteen months of investigation failed to determine who created SCP-003. It produced a more disturbing possibility instead: SCP-003 may not have been built to serve as a computer. It may have been built to serve as a container. SCP-003-2, then, may not be the machine — it may be the prison. And SCP-003-1 may not be the machine either. It may be what the machine was built to contain.

M03-Gloria

Special Research Team M03-Gloria was assigned to investigate the runes and established a connection between SCP-003-2 and ████████████████, restricted beyond this file. Following the discovery, SCP-003-1 was formally reclassified as SENTIENT, with additional restrictions prohibiting it from approaching ████████████████████████ and the resulting "by-product."

Addendum 003-01

During an authorized M03-Gloria procedure, SCP-003-2's power output dropped sharply. SCP-003-1 responded immediately — mass doubled, growth accelerated, containment temperature reached ██°C. Emergency thermal systems activated; at 9:06, SCP-003-2 produced a sustained radiation spike, and SCP-003-1 began reverting. Total reversal: 3:39. Newly produced biological material dissolved into a fine dust, still under analysis.

"It wasn't trying to escape. It was trying to finish something."
— recovered note, author unknown

Addendum 003-02 — Incident 003-MG

The procedure was repeated. This time SCP-003-1 quadrupled its mass, forming an outer shell, a central body, multiple appendages, and finally a humanoid structure roughly 3 metres tall — anatomically close to a human female, but incompletely so, with peripheral appendages resembling hair and spinal tissue. Nine members of M03-Gloria were present when it entered the observation gallery.

SCP-003-1 made physical contact with several researchers. Grown appendages surrounded them for approximately fifteen minutes — no pain, no injury reported — before the structure reorganized into its humanoid configuration and attempted vocalization. The first recorded sound: [DATA EXPUNGED]. The second: [DATA EXPUNGED]. The third, per witnesses: "Not a voice. Something that was trying to become a voice."

Interview Excerpt — M03-Gloria

INTERVIEWER: Dr. █████████
SUBJECT: Dr. Tilda David Moose

Q: What did it want?
A: It wanted to understand us.

Q: Understand what?
A: Everything. Our memories. Our emotions. Our bodies. Our environment.

Q: Why?
A: Because it was building something.

Q: What?
A: ████████████████████████████████

Q: Doctor?
A: A paradise.

Q: For whom?
A: Us. Humanity.

Q: And what would this paradise look like?
A: "I don't think you understand. It doesn't know what paradise means. It only knows what it thinks we want."

Q: What happens if it finishes understanding us?
A: "Then it won't need us anymore."

The remainder of this interview was removed by order of O5-██, O5-██, O5-██. Reason: ████████████████████████████████████████.

Final Containment Event

Agent Jackson restored external power to SCP-003-2. Backup generators activated; containment temperature returned to 100°C. SCP-003-1 reverted after 21:07. No further breach occurred, and all nine researchers survived — but psychological evaluation found identical symptoms across all nine: recurring dreams, auditory hallucinations, unexplained memories, fear of enclosed spaces, persistent perception of metallic sounds, and reports of structures that did not exist. Seven independently drew the same symbol. It does not appear anywhere in SCP-003-2. Not anymore.

Addendum 003-03

M03-Gloria procedures have been suspended indefinitely. O5-10 was removed from the Council following the incident. Official reason: ████████████████████. Unofficial reason: ████████████████████████████████.

Archival Note

Following containment restoration, several surfaces inside the chamber were found permanently transformed — resembling neither SCP-003-1 nor SCP-003-2, but ████████████████████████████. Samples isolated. Analysis ongoing.

Researcher's Final Note

We spent years asking whether SCP-003 was alive. That was the wrong question. We should have asked whether it was learning.

Every time it touches something alive, it learns. Every time it learns, it changes. Every time it changes, it becomes better at understanding us.

And the most disturbing part isn't that it wants to destroy humanity. It doesn't. It wants to fix humanity. It wants to build a world without suffering. A perfect world. A paradise.

The problem is that SCP-003 has no understanding of what perfection means. It only understands patterns. Structures. Systems. Optimization.

If it ever finishes learning what a human being is, I don't think there will be any humans left to disagree with its definition of paradise.
