Izanagi and Izanami: The Complete Creation of Japan, the First Gods, and the Origin of Life and Death
The earth was young, soft, and unstable—floating like oil upon water.
From this uncertain beginning, the first divine beings appeared.
They were invisible, beyond form, and beyond human understanding:
- The Spirit Master of the Center of Heaven
- The August Wondrously Producing Spirit
- The Divine Wondrously Producing Ancestor
Reed-like growths appeared from the floating land, and from them, new gods were born.
Generation after generation followed, until finally, the last divine pair appeared:
With them, creation would truly begin.Izanagi and Izanami — “The Male Who Invites” and “The Female Who Invites.”
The earlier deities gave Izanagi and Izanami a mission:
to make and solidify the land.
They were given a sacred weapon:
The jeweled spear
Standing on the Floating Bridge of Heaven, they looked down at the chaotic ocean below. They dipped the spear into the brine and stirred it.
When they lifted the spear, the drops that fell from it hardened and formed an island.
This island became their first world.
They descended to it and built a palace, along with a great pillar that stretched toward heaven.
Izanami examined her body and realized that one part of her was incomplete.
Izanagi replied that his body was complete, but one part had grown in excess.
They decided to unite and create new land.
Following a ritual, they walked around the pillar and met behind it.
When they met, Izanami spoke first:
“What a fine young man.”
Izanagi responded afterward.
They united—but the result was not successful.
Their first child was a leech-child, weak and malformed.
They placed it in a basket and set it adrift.
Their next creation was also flawed—a floating island they did not accept.
Disappointed, they returned to the heavens to seek guidance.
The gods revealed the mistake.
the ritual had been performed incorrectly because the female had spoken first.
So Izanagi and Izanami returned and repeated the ritual properly.
This time, Izanagi spoke first:
“What a fine young woman.”
Izanami responded.
They united again.
And this time, creation succeeded.
From their union came the formation of the land:
- the eight main islands of Japan
- six smaller islands
With land now formed, they continued creating.
They gave birth to gods representing the natural world:
- the sea
- the sea-straits
- rivers
- winds
- trees
- mountains
The final birth changed everything.
Izanami gave birth to the fire deity.
The flames were so intense that she was fatally burned.
For the first time in existence:
Izanami died.death appeared.
Izanagi was overcome with grief, and from his tears, a new deity was born.
But grief turned into rage.
He took his sword and killed the fire god.
From the blood on the sword came:
- three deities of rock
- two deities of fire
- one deity of water
Even destruction continued to create.
Still unable to accept her loss, Izanagi went to the underworld in search of Izanami.
In the darkness, he found her.
He asked her to return with him.
She agreed to speak with the gods of the underworld but warned him not to look at her.
Time passed, and she did not return.
Growing impatient, Izanagi broke off a piece of his comb and lit it as a torch.
When he looked, he saw something terrifying:
her body had decayed.
Maggots covered her, and from them emerged the eight deities of thunder.
Ashamed and enraged, Izanami pursued him.
She first sent the thunder deities after him.
Then she chased him herself.
Izanagi fled until he reached the entrance of the underworld.
There, he sealed it with a massive rock.
This became the permanent barrier between the world of the living and the dead.
Separated forever, Izanami declared:
she would take one thousand lives every day.
Izanagi responded:
he would create fifteen hundred new lives every day.
This explains the balance of life:
- birth
- death
- and the continuation of existence
Purification and the Birth of the Great Gods
After escaping, Izanagi purified himself through ritual bathing. From this purification, new gods were born.
Among them were:
- Amaterasu — the Goddess of the Sun
- Tsukuyomi — the God of the Moon
- Susanoo — the God of the Sea and Storms
Susanoo was eventually exiled to earth due to his behavior.
He and his sister, the Sun Goddess, produced divine descendants.
From these lineages came:
- the ancestors of the Yamato family
- the ruling imperial line of Japan
Later, the Sun Goddess sent a divine descendant to earth as the first ruler.
He descended from heaven and established authority over the land.
The Story of Princess Brilliant Blossoms
This ruler later sought to marry a beautiful woman known as Princess Brilliant Blossoms.
Her father offered him both daughters:
- Princess Brilliant Blossoms
- Princess Long as the Rocks
The father warned him:
Princess Long would have given him eternal descendants.
But by choosing Brilliant Blossoms, his lineage would become mortal.
This is why human rulers do not live forever.
To prove her faithfulness, Princess Brilliant Blossoms gave birth inside a burning palace.
From the flames, three deities were born.
Their descendants became the imperial family of Japan.
The story of Izanagi and Izanami is not just about creation.
It explains:
- how land was formed
- how gods came into existence
- how death entered the world
- how the underworld was separated
- and how human life began
The world is now complete.
What follows next is not the beginning of existence—
but the stories of the gods who rule it.
