Type 1-Minus Civilization: Mastering the Macro World

Previously, we explored Microdimensional Mastery, an alternative version of the Kardashev Scale proposed by John Barrow. If you haven’t seen the introductory article on this topic, check it out—the link is here.

Today, we take a closer look at a Type 1-minus civilization and its capabilities. Let’s dive in!

What is a Type 1-Minus Civilization?

A Type 1-minus civilization can only manipulate matter at the macro level. It has control over objects at the observable scale, meaning it can interact with things only as far as its senses allow.

For humans, this would mean manipulating only what we can see with our eyes or touch with our hands. This civilization operates on a scale of about 1 meter (10^0 m). But don’t underestimate it—despite its limitations, it can achieve remarkable progress.

Early Technological Developments

At the start, a Type 1-minus civilization would create simple tools using stones and sticks. Over time, these tools would evolve, allowing it to:

  • Construct small shelters like huts and cabins
  • Mine resources from its home planet
  • Build more complex structures like dams and freestanding buildings

Control Over Other Species

This civilization would also exert influence over less advanced species on its planet. It might:

  • Domesticate animals for transportation or food
  • Hunt and farm for sustained survival

However, over-exploitation of these resources could lead to long-term problems.

Transportation and Space Travel

With time, a Type 1-minus civilization would develop:

  • Motor vehicles for land travel
  • Aircraft for air travel
  • Primitive space exploration, such as:
    • Visiting its planet’s natural satellites
    • Sending probes to nearby planets

However, due to technological limitations, these space missions would be costly and ineffective for long-term expansion.

The Path to Type 2-Minus Civilization

To advance further, a Type 1-minus civilization must turn its focus to the microscopic world. The ability to manipulate matter at a smaller scale would unlock new technologies and breakthrough discoveries.

Once it reaches this stage, it will be on its way to becoming a Type 2-minus civilization—but that’s a discussion for another time!
